Next in our LCFMA18 MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear Graduate Spotlight series is Han Xu from China. Han’s collection will be show on the catwalk on Friday 5 January (livestream here). We spoke about the influences behind the collection, Han’s time at LCF and plans for the future.

Tell us about your final project…

The whole project is about the exploration of curve, light and colour. My project research on light and shadow qualities, light and colour, and use of marginal light in photography is also reflected in the final designs. The 3D curve presented by circus performers during the show was the starting point for the entire collection and made me interested in exploring space curves and curvature and how to combine curves with pattern cutting. I considered the impact of spatial awareness  in oversized garments and how this affected the design.

What would be your top tips to new students…

I think it is hard work and persistence. It was a dream opportunity for me to learn menswear at London College of Fashion. I faced a lot of obstacles in preparing for my course and applying for a school. Fortunately, I did not give up. It is important to persist and and have clear direction.

What made you chose LCF and London…

Firstly, LCF is a very good institution and I had heard of LCF before I came to London. After looking at work from past students I thought that I’d enjoy Fashion Design Menswear course. I chose to study in London because it is a truly stylish city, with lots of history and avant-garde contemporary art. The strong art scene is deeply enticing to me. I found that everything here really did not let me down. As a student of design, London is undoubtedly a very good choice.

What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…

I think the biggest challenge is time management. It is really not a simple matter to choose the best solution in a short period of time.

What song or album are you currently listening to?

I was listening to Johnny Hallyday’s album recently. I am a rock fan and I’m very sad about his death.

Have you been on a work placement or internship…

I have not got a job or an internship yet, but I will seriously consider that after London Fashion Week.

My biggest inspirations and muses are…

My biggest inspirations and muses are the things around me, including things that can sometimes be seen, and smell and sound.

What are your plans for life after your MA…

I’m planning to go to Paris and try my own brand building there while enjoying the beauty of Paris.
