In today's increasingly competitive job market, obtaining an MBA award is seen as one of the most highly respected qualifications in the world. Alongside this credibility, you will acquire new skills, develop business acumen and advance your career, opening the door to new opportunities and a higher earning potential.

Focused on the wider global fashion industry, LCF's MBA is designed for those eager to upskill and challenge themselves to engage with new knowledge and ways of thinking.

We caught up with two current students,  Hussain and Sarah, to hear all about their experience on the course so far.

Hussain and Sarah, hello! Can you tell us about yourselves and why you chose to study an MBA at LCF?

Hussain: I have a background in civil engineering, specialising in project management. During my undergraduate degree, I found myself desiring to work in an industry I was more passionate about. I pivoted to work at one of Canada’s leading fashion brands called Aritzia, where I helped manage in-house brands through all phases of the product lifecycle and development.

I chose the LCF MBA since I felt there was a gap in my knowledge from a fashion-business perspective, and to gain experience in a city with a global impact on the fashion scene.

Sarah: Originally from Perth, Western Australia, I have a BA in Fashion Design. I’ve worked in the Australian fashion industry for over 6 years as a Design and Production Manager specialising in Womenswear and Made-To-Order production.

I chose to study the LCF MBA to gain a global understanding of business functions specific to the fashion industry, from a highly reputable university. The MBA program provides a comprehensive framework learning about business strategy, product development, global sourcing, marketing, finance, and innovation for a holistic overview.

Can you tell us about your experience so far, and what aspects of the MBA have you enjoyed the most?

Hussain: Coming from a non-traditional fashion background, the LCF MBA has allowed my existing knowledge to be rooted within the fashion context while exposing me to new areas of the industry such as buying and merchandising.

I have enjoyed the creative projects the most – such as trend forecasting, range planning and fashion marketing!

Sarah: My experience so far has been highly informative and enriching. I’ve gained insight into business strategy, marketing, and global sourcing whilst also developing soft skills during human skills workshops.

I’ve made lifelong friendships with like-minded individuals from diverse backgrounds, learning from their experiences. Additionally, I’ve grown my network and connected with industry professionals who have worked for renowned brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Ganni.

The MBA course is the perfect way to become well-equipped to pursue high-level roles or achieve your fashion business ambitions.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying to the course?

Hussain: Do not shy away from your previous experience and leverage your interdisciplinary and diverse experience as an advantage, rather than a hindrance.

As my career progresses, the more I appreciate my engineering background and perceive it as an asset. I now attribute my success to my engineering background, as it has equipped me with a unique skillset while standing out from others with traditional fashion backgrounds.

Sarah: The MBA course is the perfect way to become well-equipped to pursue high-level roles or achieve your fashion business ambitions. Be prepared to apply yourself with a disciplined approach to studies, the MBA course is quite demanding and requires dedication and diligence. Furthermore, UAL has an amazing range of resources that allows for a rich educational experience.

Why would you recommend studying an MBA within a specialist fashion institution?

Hussain: If you are certain this is the right industry for you, then studying a fashion MBA is a no-brainer. All the teaching material is rooted within the fashion context, which helps to develop a deeper understanding of the industry and provides an easier time when entering the job market. Additionally, during the program, you can specialise and hone in on a specific topic you find interesting – for me, it is trend forecasting.

Sarah: Studying an MBA within a specialist institution allows you to gain the most up-to-date knowledge in an industry that moves at a rapid rate. This allows you to be fully equipped and ready to tackle industry disruptors. The course provides insight into fashion operations and key functions of the industry, learning first-hand from the UAL teaching staff who have extensive experience in fashion.

Have you had interactions with the fashion industry while studying the course?

Hussain: There are multiple touchpoints with industry professionals, such as guest lecturers, events, and brand consulting projects. The LCF MBA also has a mentorship program embedded within it, allowing you to connect with an industry professional throughout the program.

Sarah: The MBA course has multiple industry expert talks throughout the units, as well as the opportunity to join the PGT professional mentorship program. The program assigns an industry mentor who provides support and guidance for your career path, advising, encouraging, and challenging your ambitions.
