With London College of Fashion (LCF) now firmly established in Stratford, its specialist courses are continuing to prepare students for careers at the heart of the fashion and beauty industries.
Among them is BA (Hons) Hair and Make-Up for Fashion, one of the most industry‑focused programmes of its kind. We spoke with recent graduate, Lina, who has since returned to LCF as a hair and make-up technician, supporting students while building her own freelance career.
Hi Lina! Can you tell us what first attracted you to studying at London College of Fashion, and specifically the Hair and Make-Up for Fashion course?
The location was a huge factor, I wanted to live and study in London, one of the major fashion capitals of the world. Hair and make-up is something I’ve always been passionate about but I never realised it was even possible to pursue it as a degree, until I discovered that LCF offers such specialised courses.
How has studying in London supported your learning experience as a hair and make-up student?
Being a hair and make-up student at LCF gives you opportunities you wouldn’t get elsewhere. One of the main strengths of the course is the exposure to industry professionals, whether that’s through guest speakers, tutors, or visiting staff.
What does a typical day look like for you now in your role as a hair and make-up technician at LCF?
A typical day for me involves working in the dispensary alongside my coworkers, who are also incredibly talented teachers. The role is very hands-on and varied, including organising and setting up equipment, packing down, co-delivering lessons and supporting students throughout the day. No two days are the same and the role offers plenty of opportunity for growth.
What motivated you to stay at LCF after graduating and take up the technician role?
I really enjoyed my time at LCF and on the hair and make-up course. I was sad to leave until I heard there was an opening in the department. I knew straight away that I wanted to pursue it. Working here allows me to stay in my field, work part-time while continuing to freelance, and learn from my coworkers about teaching and new hair and make-up skills.
In what ways do you think studying at LCF helped you build the confidence and practical skills needed to succeed in such a competitive industry?
LCF acts as a real entry point into the industry. The staff and guidance you receive throughout your time here help you learn the ways of the industry and build confidence in both hair and make-up through technical lessons.
The course gives you a space where making mistakes is part of the learning process, so you can gain experience safely before entering professional work.
What advice would you give to someone considering this course, particularly if they’re concerned about employability or career prospects?
Take full advantage of your time at LCF. Being a student here provides a unique level of support and guidance, giving you the confidence and tools to pursue whichever career path you choose. Use your time wisely, it helps soften the transition into professional life and prepares you for the industry.
Looking back, what is the one aspect of your experience at LCF that made the biggest difference to your career journey?
Take every opportunity you’re given. That’s how I approached my time at LCF, doing things that scare you is often the fastest way to grow and progress.
