BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories is a course that connects design, making and business skills with the objective to prepare the next generation of accessory designers and product developers who can make an innovative, relevant and visionary contribution to accessory design and development within the fashion industry.

We recently caught up with student Tanniah Aquino, to hear about her experience of applying to the course and all about the opportunities she's had to connect with industry.

Hi Tanniah! Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to study BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories?

Upon leaving school in Australia, I was uncertain about my university path. However, my move to London in January 2021 led me to explore my passion for fashion through a UAL short course.

While awaiting the start of my foundation course, I discovered my love for creating bags. During my Foundation course, I designed many bags which received so much encouragement from peers who recognised my talent.

This led me to apply for BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories at LCF.  I'm delighted with my decision, as the technicians, skills, and facilities resonate with my aspirations.

Can you tell us about a project you have recently enjoyed working on?

A recent project involved creating a bag using donated leather from Lineapple. It presented an exciting challenge as I had to push my design boundaries and problem-solving skills due to working with limited leather scraps.

This experience heightened my awareness of sustainability in fashion, emphasising the significance of responsible leather sourcing and production processes.

I also enjoyed enhancing my Adobe Illustrator skills by meticulously crafting detailed specification sheets for the project. Overall, this project allowed me to blend creativity with practicality while contributing to my professional growth and understanding of sustainable design practices.

What inspires you?

I find inspiration in exploring London, engaging in conversations with people, and browsing through books. Reflecting on what truly brings me joy and sparks my enthusiasm fuels my creativity. I'm inspired by experiences and topics that resonate deeply with me, igniting a passion that I can eagerly discuss at length.

What skills have you learned on BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories that you have been able to practice outside of London College of Fashion?

BA (Hons) Cordwainers Fashion Bags and Accessories has equipped me with versatile skills applicable beyond London College of Fashion. Enhanced communication through presentations aids in articulating ideas effectively.

Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator enables me to create detailed spec sheets crucial in design, manufacturing, and production.

Pattern cutting and 3D design development expand my capabilities in fashion.

Collaborative group discussions have enabled me to develop key teamwork skills that are essential when working in the fashion industry. The combination of these skills will prepare me for success in various facets of the fashion industry beyond the classroom.

What are your plans for the next few years, and where do you want to see yourself professionally?

In the next few years, I envision myself thriving in London's fashion industry, focusing on designing bags. My goal is to collaborate with various brands, both small and large, honing my skills through diverse experiences.

I aspire to work within creative teams, contributing innovative ideas and fostering connections with like-minded individuals. Ultimately, I aim to grow professionally as a designer, embracing opportunities to travel, explore different design approaches, and make meaningful contributions to the fashion landscape.

Have you had interactions with fashion industry links, if so, how?

Yes, I've had interactions with the fashion industry through various avenues. I've worked behind the scenes at London Fashion Week as a model dresser, gained insights through high-end retail, and expanded my network through social interactions and LinkedIn.

Networking is crucial; I've learned to connect with industry professionals through university events, free gatherings, and conversations. Confidence and effective communication are key in this competitive industry.

I've also had the opportunity to watch a few shows, which I gained access to through contacts and networking. I encourage others to seize every opportunity to network and advance professionally.
