BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear at London College of Fashion is all about testing, refining and understanding what it takes to turn your ideas into something real.
Ideas are pushed beyond sketchbooks into real-world contexts – pitched to industry partners, developed through live briefs and, in some cases, realised as physical products or exhibited to the public.
Designing with industry in mind
Throughout the course, students will work on projects with our renowned industry partners, pushing them to think beyond the concept stage. From considering production, audience profiles to sustainability; these real-world briefs highlight the realities of bringing a design to life.
For example, this year, 10 students presented their final proposals to J&L Studios, a London-based studio specialising in bringing concepts to life through sampling and production. This exciting opportunity saw students not only competing for the chance to win £1,000, but also the valuable chance of having their designs developed into a professional sample set
Another group of 10 students pitched their ideas to The New Craft House, a UK-based fabric and sewing company focused on selling designer deadstock. This time, the winning student received £500 in deadstock fabric to support the development of their collection, encouraging a more sustainable approach to design.
Learning through making
Alongside live briefs, students build their practical skills through hands-on workshops; deepening both technical skills and material understanding.
Working with Fleek, a platform connecting resellers with vintage and second-hand clothing suppliers, students took part in a series of six workshops focused on upcycling and draping. Using jersey garments provided by Fleek, they explored new approaches to construction, material reuse and creative problem-solving.
These sessions reflect the course’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, encouraging students to rethink how garments can be reimagined.
From studio to exhibition
The course also provides numerous chances for students to show their work outside of the University.
In two workshops led by BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear alumni, Louis Mayhew and Alesia Cida, students worked with the William Morris Gallery, a public museum celebrating the work of designer William Morris and contemporary craft. Together, they developed and refined artefacts for a live competition, responding to the gallery’s context and audience.
Following this, 10 students were selected to present their final designs to the gallery, with the chance to have their work reproduced, exhibited and sold – a rare opportunity to see their designs enter a professional retail and exhibition space.
A course shaped by collaboration
By the time our students graduate, they leave with more than a portfolio. They have pitched to industry partners, worked with real materials, responded to sustainability challenges and presented their work in professional contexts.
It’s this balance of creativity, technical skill and industry experience that prepares LCF students to shape the future of womenswear.
