For a second year, Burberry has partnered with London College of Fashion (LCF), University of the Arts London, for the ‘Reimagining Materials’ competition.

The initiative challenges students to reinterpret iconic Burberry designs using surplus fabrics only, championing the next generation of design talent while showcasing circular design and creativity.

As part of Burberry’s 170th anniversary celebrations, students were invited to reimagine the house’s Heritage Trench and Car Coats, reinforcing Burberry’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent. Burberry’s product, design and merchandising teams provided practical insight into the design process, alongside sessions exploring the brand’s heritage and house codes.

20 shortlisted students developed prototypes using surplus materials, including Burberry Check trench coat linings and cotton gabardine – the revolutionary fabric invented by Thomas Burberry in 1879. Finalists were selected to present their designs at an exhibition held at Burberry’s Horseferry House on Monday 20 April, with the winning design chosen by a panel of judges including model Erin O’Connor, Burberry Chief Executive Officer Joshua Schulman, Chief Marketing Officer Jonathan Kiman and Chief Product Merchandising and Planning Officer Paul Price.

The winning design belonged to Aamna Yasin, BA (Hons) Pattern Cutting student, who received a cash prize and will join Burberry’s design team for an internship later this year. Reflecting on her win, Aamna shared:

“I’m so happy to have won the Burberry competition — it’s been a journey that involved a lot of dedication, from creating the technical drawings to developing the toile and final garment. My main goal was to design something that felt both functional and thoughtful, really inspired by Burberry’s heritage and what their customers would genuinely connect with. Winning still feels a bit unreal. Being part of the exhibition and meeting the team was such a special moment for me, and having the chance to meet the Chief Executive Officer, Joshua Schulman, was incredibly exciting. Hearing him say that my design was inspiring meant so much to me and is something I’ll always remember. As a second-year student, I had already been thinking about taking a placement year, so this opportunity feels like everything has fallen into place. I’m really excited to start my internship and be part of the team - I can’t wait to learn and grow from the experience.”

Congratulations to the 9 other finalists: Jay McMillan, Dylan Mycroft, Adam Turnbull (BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear) Wendy Huang (BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear) Daphne Scotto (BA (Hons) Fashion Sportswear) Yunho Ooh, Rei Chaewon Lee (MA Fashion Design Technology (Womenswear) Ace Yin (MA Pattern and Garment Technology), and Minsung Cho (MA Pattern and Garment Technology).

We were incredibly impressed by the quality and ambition of the designs presented. The finalists demonstrated a deep understanding of our heritage and an exciting ability to reinterpret the trench through a circular lens.

The ‘Reimagining Materials’ competition builds on a range of early careers initiatives at Burberry designed to support talented young people and recent graduates in gaining first‑hand experience alongside industry professionals.

Our Reimagining Material competition celebrates the imagination, creativity, and technical skill of young talent today. By reimagining our most iconic silhouette, the Burberry Trench Coat, each student brought a fresh perspective to circular design and a real appreciation for craft. Their work reflects the exceptional talent emerging across London and the UK, and we’re proud to support the next generation shaping the future of our industry.
