Here she talks about being a recent graduate of the course and the unique benefits of studying at London College of Fashion.
Tell us about your professional experience and background?
My career spans over a period of twenty years as a production designer, fashion lecturer and fashion/textile designer. After graduating from my art school in Lithuania, I acquired work as a production designer for a high-end label, incorporating leather, fur and a mix of different fabrics. When I moved to London I volunteered for the Louis De Gama fashion label as a production assistant, which greatly expanded my knowledge of the western fashion industry, I was also involved in London Fashion Week alongside his label. I then started working in the education sector teaching fashion students while I was studying this exact course. Upon my graduation I was invited to work for Pickurberry, an online boutique that specialises in unique one-off pieces. Later on I was working in collaboration with Eugine Lin as a textiles designer, engineering patterns for three seasons of his collections. My prints for EL 2013 S/S collection were featured in British Vogue and on the red carpet.
What makes your course unique?
Our unique weekend and evening learning opportunities give people who are passionate about their future something special - the chance to study at one of the world’s top art universities and to move forward with their life goals at the same time. This focused way of learning attracts a special type of student, one who is dedicated to their studies, and determined to improve themselves.
What, if anything, have you found surprising about teaching on this course?
Taught by active practitioners in a research-intensive environment, Fashion Design students work alongside students from Fashion Business, Visual Merchandising and Fashion Media – a unique hothouse of creative inspiration.
The students benefit from a dynamic and positive learning environment that promotes innovative concepts, professional collaboration and a pioneering approach to fashion design.
What inspires and excites you in terms of your area of practice?
An interaction between creativity and technology, ‘innovation' is the overiding theme for me. It is also apparent that innovation arises through experimentation and ‘the meeting of minds'. The ability to develop and share my work is both a great prospect and an excellent investment.
What do graduates of the course go on to do?
Our graduates have gone on to have great careers in the fashion industry including working for fashion houses such as Burberry, Mulberry, Karen Millen and John Lewis. A few have opened their own fashion labels for example, JenaTheo was founded by graduates from this course. Some go on to do a postgraduate course, enabling them to expand their capabilities and knowledge. Many move into the education sector, I myself am a graduate and went on into teaching. Lecturing fashion can also be an incredible inspiration, the chance to provoke a fresh set of young designers is immensely rewarding.
And briefly, how would you sum up the LCF experience to prospective students.
Our students are committed and enthusiastic, from all backgrounds, careers and cultures, aged from 18 to 80 plus. They bring this varied experience into their studies and share it with fellow students.
