The BA (Hons) Critical Practice in Fashion Media course is innovative undergraduate degree, renowned for its fusion of critical theory and practical application. The course explores fashion media and communication as powerful tools for addressing contemporary challenges.

Focusing on the climate crisis, the course emphasises active engagement with the world to drive transformation. Students on the course will develop essential critical, creative, and technical skills to navigate uncertainty and capitalise on opportunities to make a significant impact.

We caught up with student Nandini Nakar, to learn more about her reasons for choosing the course, projects she has worked, future aspirations and, more!

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose the course?

My name’s Nandini Narkar and I’m 19 years old. I’m from Bangalore, India. In my free time, I enjoy dancing and trying new recipes in the kitchen. I chose this course because it lets me dive into the broad field of fashion communication and media and truly explore my interests.

However, with the focus on AI, sustainability and social change, the  futuristic and innovative approach to the fashion industry is what piqued my interest. I believe that it will equip me with the unique skills that are relevant in today's fashion climate.

Can you tell us about a project you have worked or are working on, and what aspects you enjoyed the most?

I love movies and playing around with videography, so I really enjoyed the Hybrid Narratives unit in which we had to make our own video.  My video focused on western beauty standards and how minority groups are affected by it.

I’m also enjoying the ongoing; Fashion Cultures and History unit.

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of applying for the course?

For anyone interested in the course, I’d advise them to be ready to explore a multitude of skills and to not be intimidated by the broadness of the degree but view it as an opportunity to learn and find their true pathways.

What inspires you?

I think culture, cities and people inspire me. I always find myself inspired by the unique morals and lifestyles of different countries and the way different people uniquely consume and distribute them through their identity. I think being Indian, whilst being from multiple Indian cultural backgrounds inspire me every day.

What skills have you learned on the course that you have been able to practice outside of London College of Fashion?

I learnt how to use Meta Sparks Studio in which one can makes Instagram filters. While I haven’t used it outside of university yet, I think it will be a very interesting skill to utilise.

What are your plans for the next few years, and where do you want to see yourself professionally?

My passions lie in the editorial and marketing fields of fashion. Hopefully in the next few years I'll be working in a creative direction team for magazines that I really love, or working on campaigns!

Have you had interactions with fashion industry links, if so, how?

Throughout my time on the course, we’ve been given us countless opportunities to emerge ourselves into the fashion world, whether that’s been through talks with the LVMH CFO, sessions with magazine editors or lectures by leading professors in fashion. The opportunities are abundant, and our Course Leader and university are always on the lookout for more.
