Sally Winter studied BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear at LCF. After completing her degree she moved back to her hometown of Durban, where she now works as a university lecturer and has recently launched her own active wear label called, Rush Activewear. We caught up with Sally to find out about her time at LCF and what she’s been up to since.

Tell us a bit about your background and where you’re from…

I was born in Durban, South Africa and have lived here my whole life – except for my four year stint in London. Growing up in South Africa and living in London, I have been exposed to many different cultures.

What did you study at LCF?

I began my adventure at LCF starting with International Preparation for Fashion (CERT HE) and then continued onto BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Menswear.

What made you decide to study here?

I have always been interested in fashion and keen on sewing and creating new things. For me the only place to study fashion is first of all, in London, and secondly, at one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world, London College of Fashion.

What was it like being a student in London?

I have never experienced anything like it before. Leaving your front door and being able to get to places like the V&A Museum within 45 minutes, was incomparable to being anywhere else in the world. As a student in London you don’t just have the best social experience, you are able to get your hands on all the resources you could dream of.

What have you been up to since finishing your course?

I recently launched an active wear brand called Rush Activewear and I am also currently a part-time lecturer at the Design School of Southern Africa.

Tell us about Rush…

Rush is high quality fashionable and innovative active wear for women. The styles are designed to provide comfort, style and functionality. I’ve experimented with different patterns, materials and cuts, all with the idea of making women feel confident. The waistbands are thicker, the cuts are more flattering and comfortable. Rush is suitable for pilates, yoga, running and high intensity exercise.

What would your top tips be for students who want to start their own fashion business?

You need bucket loads of stamina! You have to have the resources to perfect your quality. It takes some time to get the most stable manufacturer, so you have to expect pit falls along the way. Don’t compromise on quality though, because your products will be measured against market leaders. Always remember keep persevering!

What are your plans for the future?

I am currently based back in South Africa however I would very much like to return to London soon, bringing with me my active wear brand.  Moving forward I feel that it is important to grow my business, to provide more employment for the people of South Africa as well as furthering my creative passion and career.
