Beyond the show

Take a closer look at the costumes and props you see on screen and stage. This is a collection of pieces designed for performance by students and graduates from BA and MA Performance: Design and Practice.

The interdisciplinary performance practices at Central Saint Martins foreground live and screen-based immersive experiences that blur the lines between reality and imagination. This exhibition shares costumes and props meticulously designed by past and present students from the BA and MA Performance: Design and Practice courses. Stripped of their onstage context, these creations offer a unique opportunity to appreciate the craft and skill close-up.

Showcasing the transformative power of costume in performance. These works evoke changing characters through movement within costume. They ask audiences to immerse themselves in the stage life of captivating characters.

Every costume and prop on display carries with it a story of evolution and collaboration. Developed alongside the performance, their designs shaping and being shaped by the unfolding narrative. From whimsical characters to otherworldly creatures, each piece contributes to the rich variety of approaches to performance and the body.

Behind each creation lies a wealth of techniques and materials, from crochet and tailoring to hat making and puppetry. These diverse skills come together to breathe life into our students' visions, offering a glimpse into the boundless creativity that defines our courses.

Join us as we celebrate the artistry, innovation, and magic of our students work in performance design as practice beyond the confines of the stage.
