Reinventing the Ice Jacket

Veuve Clicquot’s iconic Ice Jacket has always embodied functionality, innovation and haute-couture design. Inspired by the isotherm properties of divers’ wetsuits, the original 2004 Ice Jacket was designed to be an object of beauty that would be reused again and again.

The champagne house approached us to explore ways in which they could lead the change in packaging innovation and address the challenge of neoprene usage in its original product. The project explored ways to reinvent the classic design, addressing the negative effects of neoprene usage through pioneering innovative, disruptive and novel materials and processes.

Graduates from our BA Product and Industrial Design course conducted research, considering the entire product life-cycle, including materials, manufacture, post-purchase usage and a potential ‘second life’ for the product. They immersed themselves in the brand’s 250 year history and presented a range of beautiful, sustainable concepts that retained the isotherm properties of the original.

Veuve Clicquot gave us so much creative freedom and they were so open to ‘blue-sky thinking’. That’s really rare from a big brand, to actually want to listen to young creatives.

The winning design, by Debbie Petrou, is composed of 100% recycled plastic. It is created using a revolutionary and innovative 3D knitting process that produces the jacket in a single ‘print’ from a digital pattern. This mono-material approach uses on average 30% less material than regular production. The product is isothermal, reusable, and decreases CO2 emissions by 96%.

Veuve Clicquot launched the product in 14 countries in 2022 as part of their ‘ICONS’ collection.
