Digital Media Lab

Design, create and build digital and physical prototypes using cutting-edge technologies and tools.

Get help from specialist technicians to turn ideas into tangible, physical objects. Create new products, publications, experiment with new materials or prototype a design.

Software:

  • Adobe suite.
  • Animation support.
  • 3D packages.
  • Computer-aided design (CAD) programmes.
  • Programming languages.
Top-down view of an electronics work surface covered with components used for prototyping and robotics. On a blue mat are several microcontroller boards, small sensor modules, jumper wires, and connectors. There are breadboards with attached wires, a servo motor, and LEGO-style robotic motors and structural parts. We can also see batteries and battery clips, alligator clips, resistors, and small breakout boards arranged loosely rather than assembled into a single circuit. A pencil and various cables are scattered around.

Physical and creative computing studio

in this this lab students can learn about physical computing (sensors, and robotics) and creative coding (machine learning, computer vision, Raspberry Pis, sustainable computing).

What can I do here?

  • Sensors and robotics.
  • Machine learning.
  • Computer vision.
  • Raspberry Pis.
  • Sustainable computing.

Mixed Reality Lab

A dedicated space where students and researchers can explore and experiment with the integration of  virtual and physical environments. Advanced hardware and software systems create an immersive experience, allowing interaction with digital objects in a seemingly real way.

Equipment:

  • Virtual reality headsets.
  • Motion capture setups.
  • Specialised hardware and software.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) suite

A specialised room with high-performance computers and CAD software specifically for computer-aided design and drafting.

Essential for product development and design processes, 3D digital modelling tools enable form creation and digital workflows for manufacturing and presentation.

Technical support is available by appointment across 2D and 3D animation, 3D modelling, CAD/CAM, parametric design, motion graphics and mixed reality making.

What can I create here?

  • Digital drawings.
  • 3D models.
  • Architectural blueprints.
  • Detailed technical drawings.
  • Digital garments.
  • Animations.

Animation

Expert technicians are available to support students with a range of animation tools.

What can I use here?

  • Adobe suite: Animate, Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop.
  • Specialised animation software including Maya, Blender, Cinema 4D, Toon Boom, Z Brush, Unreal, and TV Paint.
