Print and Dye

Hear more about the Print and Dye facilities

The Heat Press, Print and Dye workshops focus on developing fabric designs, through colour, pattern and texture, using screen print, heat transfer (both traditional and digital) and dyeing (including yarn dyeing). A wide variety of media is available to use, producing textiles for fashion garments, wallpapers and furnishing fabrics.

Our workshops are accessed by inducted students on the BA Fashion and BA Textile Design courses, as well as Graduate Diploma in Fashion, MA Fashion, MA Material Futures and MA Biodesign.

Equipment:

  • 4 heat transfer presses and a rotary press
  • Fume cabinets, induction hobs and dye vats
  • Steamers and baking cabinets
  • Light boxes and cutting mats for artwork preparation
  • Washing machines, spin dryers and tumble dryer
  • Screens with 43TW mesh for sampling and repeat printing
  • Range of pigments, inks and dyes
  • 55 metres of print tables, for both repeat and placement printing
  • Screen drying cabinets and screen exposure units
  • Wash out bays with pressure washers and gentle hoses

Looking to a more sustainable future, the print and dye workshops will gradually move towards a lower dependency on synthetic and chemical-based dye and print media, developing more sustainable and organic natural dye and print colour systems, to work with our current processes
