This paper by Dr Diane Silverthorne traces a Wagnerian tendency in the visual arts in turn-of-the century Vienna. It focuses on the artistic practices of the Vienna Secession in the staging of exhibitions, and a modernist production of Tristan and Isolde. Certain parallels may be found in the art installations at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall.
