Interview

Why did you choose to study MA Performance: Society at Central Saint Martins?

I had been creating socially engaged work for a few years and having formerly been a biologist and then a commercial brand designer, I felt I needed a good education in art practice to ground and contextualise my work. The MA Performance: Society at CSM is innovative and matches more closely my current situation and interests than anything else I found.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far?

I created a stop motion film about a burial that I performed in my garden. I lay in a hole in the ground and was covered with the turf by my husband and a friend-neighbour. I was not responding directly to the course as it seemed, but in a kind of "reaction" to the course material - this turned out to be a very fruitful creation and I discovered some new principles for my practice including ‘do what I need to do, make what I need to make’.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Ensure you have the time available and be ready for a very stimulating, engaging program with very open and supportive course tutors.

What has been the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

Creating work with fellow students under the tutor's guidance.

What are your career aspirations?

I would like to be showing in galleries regularly with performance and material work.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

I am valid as an artist.
