Interview

Why did you choose to study BA (Hons) Fashion Communication: Histories and Theories at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

BA (Hons) Fashion Communication: Histories and Theories is a unique course, with a broad subject base and engaging format. The course equipped me with an understanding of cultural histories and theories from the renaissance to present, exploring the role of fashion in society through its representation in painting, photography, film and more. You are encouraged to write and think critically on a regular basis, and the course ultimately provides you with the opportunity and confidence to formulate your ideas into a final major project.

What have you been working on since graduating?

I am the Creative Assistant at Aram, a modern design company based in Covent Garden.

What was the most interesting project you worked on during your time on the course?

Definitely my final major project in final year, which took the form of thesis that explored  fashion, style and identity in New York City in the 1980s, through the analysis of the photography books On The Street (2006) by Amy Arbus and Back in the Days (2001) by Jamel Shabazz.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

I would suggest that reading as much as you can, but also immersing yourself in photography, film, media etc. Building up your visual as well as textual knowledge is so crucial and something I wish I did sooner.

What was the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

Probably seeing the final degree show in person. It was a lovely moment to reflect on the years I spent studying there and also to see the projects produced by my talented course mates.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

The ability to formulate my ideas and thinking into complete finished projects that I am proud of, and also the confidence to present my work to others.
