Biography

Name and Job Title

Adrian Di Duca, Technical Coordinator - Archway

Background

I studied Fine Art at Wimbledon and in my final year I was offered a part time post as a Technician at the Byam Shaw School of Art. I stayed part time at Byam Shaw for fourteen years until Byam Shaw became a part of Central Saint Martins, when I took up a full-time position.

Before becoming full-time I worked in a variety of roles, starting as a gallery technician and ending in a full construction/building role. The last job I had was for Islington Council, designing, building and installing playgrounds and out buildings.

In this time I also managed to complete a Master’s Degree at Goldsmiths and co-found and directed the Gone Tomorrow Gallery and studios.

What do you love most about your job?

Every day I am in a position where I can help people through simply passing on knowledge and experience. The students’ gratitude is very rewarding, there can be few jobs where you hear “thank you” as often as ours.

What are your favourite things about CSM?

I am fortunate enough to work for a department that aims to keep at the forefront of technological innovations - this keeps us all on our toes. Today I am as likely to be learning a new 3D software package as I am to be found sharpening a chisel.

Who’s your favourite artist/photographer/designer/director etc.?

I could never give a single definitive answer, there are simply too many. But I do have a particular interest in figurative sculpture from early Gothic, to the German Renaissance Limewood sculptors and on through to Bernini.

What advice would you give to new students?

Technicians like doughnuts.
