Biography

Menswear graduate, Philip Strawbridge, was nominated for the 2013 Nova Awards.

CSM’s Nova nominees are put forward by their Course Leaders and represent the best talent across the degree shows. Here, Philip provides an insight into the work which earned him the prestigious place.

“Status, value and prestige are all interwoven into society. Everything we understand today The chief inspiration for my final collection is the extreme weather gear worn by polar explorers of the early twentieth century. I was specifically inspired by the peacoats, smocks, knitwear and other attire donned by Captain Scott and his team during their Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. As well as sourcing numerous images, I also visited the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, to see these garments up close and gain a better understanding of their detail and construction. Along side this I also visited the Vintage Showroom to research key pieces such as military parkas and smocks, bonded fur coats and tailoring.

My overall vision for the collection is to reinterpret these garments and silhouettes for the modern day, by deploying cuts and construction techniques that are much more contemporary. I also plan to use a range of more luxurious fabrics in richer, bolder colours.

Rather than the plain, functional cottons adopted by Scott and his peers, my collection will deploy classic and high-end menswear cloths such as wool cashmeres, worsted tailoring wools, technical coated cottons, furs and shearlings. The colour palette, inspired by Edward Seago’s oil paintings of the Antarctic, will feature strong, warm greys, with flashes of secondary, accent colours, such as white and silver.

Trims and accessories will be constructed from long-haired fox fur. The hoods on all my coats will have white and black fox fur trims, and one look will feature oversized white fox fur mittens.

Overall, the emphasis will be on creating a chic, modern, luxurious and wearable menswear collection, with innovative and imaginative use of fabric and furs in particular”.
