Catch up with MA Documentary Film alumni, Natalia Zuo, who talks about her route into making documentaries and shares what she has been working on since graduating from LCC.

What did you study at LCC and what year did you graduate?

I studied MA Documentary Film at London College of Communication and I graduated in 2016.

Where are you from in the world?

I am from a small town in China.

What inspired you to want to study documentary?

I came to the UK with my passion for football. I studied my first MA in Multimedia Journalism at the University of Westminster, hoping to become a correspondent covering the Premier League for a Chinese media organisation after graduation.

However, the experience of making my final project on marriages of convenience amongst China’s LGBT community changed my mind completely. I enjoyed every moment of self-shooting my first documentary on such a sensitive topic and it was nominated for a One World Media award.

Afterwards, I worked as a freelance researcher for BBC Two and BBC Three on a number of documentary and series. These experience reassured me that I wanted to study documentary and therefore I applied for the course at LCC.

What work and/or filmmaking are you doing at the moment?

I am working as a video journalist for the BBC at the moment. During the past few months, I have been filming and editing a three-part web documentary series for BBC Trending about live streamers in China.

Tell us about your future plans and ambitions.

The BBC is a great place to learn while working. I am hoping to produce more films across different platforms for the BBC in the next few years. Afterwards, I would love to produce my own independent projects.

What’s your guilty pleasure on TV or online?

I watch (or more likely listen to) lots of Chinese soaps while I cook/bake.

What three words would you use to best describe LCC?

Diversity, creativity, fun.

What piece of advice would you give to new students?

Push yourself a bit harder than you planned to.

Where in London do you go when you need a little inspiration?

Bertha DocHouse - the UK's first documentary cinema.
