Guildhall School of Music & Drama

A woman playing a violin.
Animation by Dariga Alpyssova & Ash Liu

The Guildhall School of Music & Drama is one of the world's top ten performing arts institutes. They approached the Business and Innovation team at London College of Communication (LCC) to collaborate with its students to create engaging animated films that would engage music teaching staff on the importance of inclusive practices, language, and processes, and creating a space that is free of prejudice, discrimination and racism.

Second-year BA (Hons) Animation students developed short films on twelve different topics related to the themes of Anti-racism, Microaggressions, Allyship and Safe Spaces and Belonging. Students attended a workshop at Guildhall School led by facilitators from Black Lives in Music, Guildhall School’s project partner.

They formed teams with students from Guildhall School’s Electronic and Produced Music (EPM) department, who created original compositions for their films. In addition to collaborating with EPM students, the animators were given access to Guildhall School’s recording facilities and the opportunity to collaborate with voice actors from its renowned Drama programme.

The topics for the films were complex, sensitive and required nuance; students were able to rise to this challenge thanks to detailed feedback from Guildhall School and the constant support given throughout the project by Roger Wilson, Director of Operations for Black Lives in Music.

After reviewing all the films, they selected twelve films for purchase. The films will be used as part of the Guildhall School’s ongoing work with the Music teaching staff, including peripatetic instructors, to help embed a culture of inclusivity within the school.

The value of working with Guildhall School of Music & Drama and giving the students a taste of professional practice is not only in the making of the animations, but the satisfaction of creating a film that has social purpose that can make a difference to their audience.

— Su-Lynn Tan, BA (Hons) Animation, Animation Arts Pathway Leader
The project was managed really expertly by LCC's team. One of the best things was working with such a diverse cohort.
