SubTV is a free interactive music TV channel based in university bars, cafes and recreational areas, reaching approximately 1.2 million students in over 80 university venues. They invited final-year LCC BA (Hons) Animation and BA (Hons) Illustration and Visual Media students to create a catalogue of new logo idents, to be broadcast on the SubTV music channel.

Students were encouraged to take inspiration from the creatively animated idents utilised by broadcasting television channels across the world, such as the boundary pushing MTV idents of the 80s and 90s. Showcasing their own personality and creative style, students produced original, vibrant and original narratives, and unique plays on the SubTV Playlister logo. SubTV staff gave feedback to students on their creative work throughout the process, to support the development of the final idents.

After reviewing the students' final work, SubTV selected selected 10 idents by BA Illustration and Visual Media, and 6 idents by BA Animation to purchase. Shown on SubTV’s channel in university venues across the UK, each ident reached over 875,000 people and had over 2.5 million impressions.

The BA IVM year 3 cohort utilised a variety of forms of design and animation to complete their ident, within the brief guidelines. Setting a brief which is embedded into the curriculum enhances the student experience and develops their professional skills. It offered our students the opportunity to interrogate the potential of contemporary image-making within the creative industries, promoting participatory learning through collaboration, and producing powerful communications for diverse audiences.
