Southwark was the first area in London to become an accredited London Living Wage Place in March 2020. The accreditation is a recognition scheme by the London Living Wage Foundation to encourage the promotion of real living wage. Southwark Council wanted to increase their number of accredited Living Wage businesses. They reached out to London College of Communication (LCC) to develop a community-voice film promoting the real living wage in Southwark.

Diploma in Professional Studies students worked on this brief. The aim was to leverage local living wage employers to influence other businesses in the borough to become real living wage employers. The students interviewed several people including Martin Seaton, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Skills and Business, employees earning the living wage and businesses like Borough Market, Jarr Market – Herne Hill and Spring Community Hub.

The students produced a 5-minute-long film which was launched by the Southwark Council during Living Wage Week in November 2023 and screened at events across the borough. Bite-sized versions for social media were also delivered which will be shared on all their platforms and network channels.

I found everyone from LCC to be consistently responsive and open to dialogue but also clear about the limits to what could and could not be done and why, which is so valuable and time-saving when working with external contractors on short-term projects, but particularly creative work, where everyone is going to have an opinion.

— Nick Wolff, Principal Strategy Officer - Southwark Council
We’ve been really impressed with how the project was managed and we’re very happy with the finished product. It’s had great feedback from our senior management in the Council, Councillor Seaton and our Living Wage Place Action group.

— James Reed, Senior Programme Officer – Living Wage Unit, Southwark Council
