Umi Lovecraft is a Lecturer in Responsible Design for the Graphic Design Communication Programme at London College of Communication.

Umi is a maker, activist, architecturally trained designer with specialist design expertise in community and planetary centred design.

Through pedagogy and practice her highest purpose is to co-create radically inclusive planetary centred design, and to decolonise and diversify design industries and education in the process.

In practice, this happens through both insider-outsider, the studio she founded focusing on working with marginalised communities and through decosm, the decolonial city-making research and design collective she started with Neba Sere in 2020.

insider-outsider and decosm exist as vehicles to build the world we actually want to live in, to create inclusive spaces that serve, inspire and support the marginalised, the excluded, and the often unrepresented ecological systems essential for sustaining people and the planet.

Umi has more than 13 years experience working in design industries and education sectors. Since 2020, Umi has served as an Expert for Design Council – the UK's national strategic advisor for design.

Her expertise in inclusive design, community led design and place shaping informs her role as a faculty member at London College of Communication (UAL) lecturing in Responsible Design across various programmes. Previously, Umi has taught and lectured at MITCentral Saint Martins, Goldsmiths University, the Royal College of ArtSheffield University, Teesside University and various other institutions. Umi holds an undergraduate degree in Fine Art from the Slade UCL, Masters in Architecture (ARB/RIBA Part 2) from the Royal College of Art  and ARB/RIBA Part 3 from the Architectural Association.

Umi has held design roles at RIBA Stirling Prize award-winning design practice de Rijke Morgan Marsh Architects (dRMM), the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design (HHCD), and Public Practice.
