BA (Hons) Illustration and Visual Media student Eva Freeman has been announced on the 10-person shortlist for Penguin Random House’s annual Student Design Award.

Every year, students enter the award as an opportunity to build their portfolio and experience a real cover design brief first-hand. Eva’s striking re-design of the classic book ‘In Cold Blood’ by Truman Capote ensured she was chosen from over 2,100 submissions.

Art Directors from Penguin Random House have now provided Eva with detailed feedback on her cover, giving her the opportunity to refine and resubmit her designs before the final judging takes place in June.

Eva will now go up against nine other student designers in the Adult Non-Fiction category. The winners in each of the three categories (Adult Fiction, Adult Non-Fiction and Children’s) will receive a work placement within the Penguin Random House UK design studios, as well as a £1,000 cash prize.

Eva explains “I’ve really found the competition exhilarating! It’s a project based on a process I’m not as developed in – I’m usually a physical artist and a portrait painter. I thought it would be a good challenge for myself to construct a book cover design as an analog artist. As a result of taking part in this competition I have learnt new processes and developed skills in different softwares. I thought it would be interesting to show how painting can be used in a design piece, and I’m really proud of the result!”

The judging panel is made up of Art Directors from across Penguin Random House, as well as guest judges from the design and publishing industry, including Sarah Hyndman, David Pearson, Chris Packham and Rathna Ramanthan.
