Biography

Interview

Kelly Verdonk graduated from MA Publishing at London College of Communication. She now works at imgZine as a Communications Researcher.

Where are you from in the world?

The Netherlands. I'm currently living in Haarlem, which is next to Amsterdam. If you want to work in digital media here you should move to this area.

What are your fondest memories of LCC?

The friends that I made from all over the world, the Summer School week in Madrid (where we visited lots of publishing companies), the creation of our own print magazine, and finally the helpful teachers who gave great advice and were always in for a joke.

What are you working on at the moment?

I've worked for a year and a half at imgZine as a Communications Researcher. We help large companies to optimise their internal and external communications by providing personalised communications on mobile devices. My job is to search for trends, conduct market research and write blog posts, white papers and reports on different kind of subjects – but all related to media and technology.

Tell us about your future plans and ambitions:

I love the psychology behind people's behaviour when it comes to media. How and why does a media product or functionality turn into a habit? Why do we express a desire for something, but once it’s there, we don't use it? By conducting market research, analysing trends and interviewing the end-users of our apps, I'm able to learn more about what our users need.

As a result, I can show which product features might work well and which might not. For now my plan is to dive into our five apps, so that I can help our company to further increase their usage.

What three words would you use to best describe LCC?

LCC is fun, practical and great for your network!

What piece of advice would you give to new students?

Try to get as much relevant connections as possible through your lectures, practical tasks and thesis. Good networking is an investment in your career. Also, try to undertake lots of study related activities during your studies.
