Pitching is one of the most nerve-wracking things a journalist has to do. Attempts to catch an editor’s eye with a paragraph or two can seem like a lot of pressure, with little room for mistakes. Having a strong initial idea and clear objectives will help shape your ideas to begin pitching with confidence so you can get your work published or on air.

Tutor information

Kate Hoyland is a journalist with 18 years of experience at the BBC, largely as a senior producer and editor for the BBC World Service, and also in TV and online. Kate has managed journalism and production training at the World Service. She set up and ran the BBC’s industry-leading Production Trainee Scheme; training creative producers for the broadcasting industry with upwards of 4,000 applicants yearly, and leading on radio training.  As well as being an empathetic trainer, Kate is a trained counsellor, and had a novel – The Icarus Diaries – published in 2010.  Kate graduated with a BA (Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from New College, Oxford, and has an MSc in the Politics of Asia and Africa from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
