This 2 day hands-on course will introduce you to the equipment, materials and techniques used for screen-printing onto textiles using a water-based ink system. You will be guided through a series of demonstrations along with one-to-one feedback allowing you to develop technical proficiency and confidence in your printmaking. 

This course provides an insightful introduction to transferring an image from sketchbook to screen. It demonstrates how to prepare your screen and print for textiles using one type of ink system, generally used in the industry.

You will receive tailored advice based on your own particular creative goals.

  • Generating images for screen
  • Coating and exposing your stencil to screen
  • Setting up the textile printing tables
  • Mixing inks

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Understand various stencil making techniques and their suitability for desired effects and image
  • Coat and expose a screen using photographic emulsion and a vacuum press
  • Use appropriate media and techniques
  • Apply knowledge of inks and dyes in design and print applications
  • Use materials and equipment safely and effectively

Tutor information

Lisa Peru has worked for the University of the Arts London, since 1996 in a variety of roles.She is a designer and lecturer in Surface Design who has taught on the BA(Hons) and FdA degree programs. Lisa also facilitates the On-course support program across the FdA in Surface Design. She has worked on various collaborative projects and short courses supported by Widening Participation. Lisa also works with the Disability team, providing extra tuition and support for students.


Materials

Students will need to bring in note taking material, apron or old t-shirt. Paper will be provided, but you may wish to purchase your own specialist printing paper. Plastic storage containers with lids are useful to prolong ink shelf life.
