London is arguably one of the most cultural, vibrant and diverse cities in the world; producers, film makers, storytellers and creatives have been inspired for centuries to capture the essence of the city. The London In Film course will provide you with an inspirational overview of London through film. During the course you will be introduced to both the pyscho-geography of the capital and to the nature of films. Different kinds of film will be examined and their representations of London contextualised by visits to the locales. From Soho, Spitalfields and Chelsea to Chiswick all the aspects of one of the world’s greatest cities will be examined.
During this five day course you will walk and visit key sites, film locations and museums and will examine particular directors and their films through seminars and discussions.
By the end of the course you will be able to understand the historical development, processes and modes of change in the life of a city through film.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
- Understand the different styles of film and basic ideas of how film works as a medium
- Introduce you to the idea of the city and its place in modern society, and of the impacts and changes that shape urban living
- Develop a sense of the history and importance of London in world history and of its ever changing nature

This course would be of interest to anyone with a desire to understand London and its history, to know more about London and to be able to think about it through film. The dialogue between film and history provides a fascinating insight into both and would interest any non-specialist who wanted to widen their cultural horizons.

Richard Osborne is a lecturer in critical theory, art theory, philosophy and film at Camberwell, Central Saint Martins and London College of Communication. Author of ‘Film Theory for Beginners’ (2014) and ‘Philosophy for Beginners’ (1990) and some 25 other works on culture, art, philosophy, Britishness, and theories of the Universe. Richard presently teaches film theory at LCC.
