Interview

What attracted you to postgraduate study, and MA 3D Computer Animation?
What attracted me to this course, first, was the fact that it was in London, because I thought that if there was a better city for me to start in the industry, that city could only be London.

Secondly, I have a passion for animation films, such as Disney, Dreamworks, since I was very young and, without a doubt, being able to take a 3D animation course was something that I wanted in order to specialise in this art.

What experience did you have prior to joining the course?
Before my master's degree I graduated in Multimedia Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts Lisbon.

Did the course provide opportunities to engage with industry?
Yes, it did! Our Course Leader went beyond his limits to provide us with the greatest material we could have lots of times.

He arranged multiple lectures with people from the industry to teach us techniques that are lacking in the industry. This was valuable for us to know, because by specialising in in demand skills and techniques was one way to increase our employability.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone thinking of studying the course, what would it be?
Don’t procrastinate. This course is all about patience. You will see a good result after loooooong hours of work. There are no shortcuts. So be patient and allow yourself to error sometimes because you’re a student, that’s the best time in your life for you to error.

Really take advantage of the time that you are still a student and use this course as much as possible to achieve a good showreel when you graduate.

Why would you recommend studying your course to others?
Honestly, I would recommend it because I am aware that we are taught a lot of stuff on this course that really isn’t taught in other universities in England, and this really leaves us with an advantage.

What was your personal highlight of studying your course at London College of Communication?
The social environment in my course. I would never expect a course in London to be taken so lightly. Of course, it was rigid, and of course that it was extremely hard, but not because of useless pressure imposed by others, but because the standards of what we did were high and we wanted to fulfil them, which is extremely positive.

Fortunately, for me and my colleagues, we had a Course Leader that really knows how to balance the seriousness of our craft and the relaxation that we need to feel in order to have a healthy mind to keep pushing and achieving good results.

Now that you have graduated, what are your plans for the future?
Currently I am submitting applications for a lot of production studios in London as a matchmove artist and an animator.

I hope that the opportunity for me to get into the industry is very near in the future, but in the meanwhile I have plans to keep developing my short-film and when finished taking it to festivals.
