Lama Ajeenah, an MA Graphic Design graduate, has just been announces as the A’ Design Award Winner for Graphics and Visual Communication in the Design Category. Lama’s winning submissions were an Amal Film Festival advertising poster and an Islamic identity branding project.

A’ Design Award and Competition aims to highlight the best designs, design concepts and design orientated products worldwide. The primary aim of the award is to create publicity, PR and advertisement opportunities for award winners while supporting the global design culture, creating incentives for entrants to come up with superior designs for a better future.

We caught up with Lama to ask her about her win at the awards, and what she’s been up to since leaving LCC.

How did you get involved with the awards?

I really just wanted to push my boundaries and try something new, and submitting to the awards seemed like a great way to do that. I submitted two of my designs, both of which were based on Islamic design and bilingual typography. One of the designs was a poster for a film festival and the other was a branding project. I like designing projects that have a social, environmental and political impact.

How did you find studying at LCC? Where do you live now? And how have your surroundings influenced you?

I live in Saudi Arabia. My vision of design has been enriched by the fact that I am half Palestinian and half Syrian living in Saudi Arabia and I studied in London. My style was influenced by the rich mixture of culture and Islamic identity in the Middle East as well as the contemporary design of the west.

How did you feel when you found out that you had won in your category?

I was informed by the programme director of the University that I’m teaching in, as she saw my picture in the A’ Design Award website. I felt so excited; I honestly was not expecting it.

What are your plans for the future?

I have just published an article about ethics in graphic design in Design Amid Magazine, and I am planning on studying bilingual typography further and publishing an article on the subject. I am also planning to take a PhD in graphic design within the field of bilingual type.
