London College of Communication (LCC) is home to makers, thinkers and innovators. Bringing inspiring ideas and ways of working to a range of diverse industries, we change the world around us and make a positive difference to society.

One of the ways in which we support our students to take the next step in their development is by offering vital support through our Industry Mentoring Programme. This initiative connects current LCC postgraduates and recent alumni to professionals from the creative sectors, all of whom channel profound understanding, experience and insight through opportunities that shape the journeys of those at the beginning of their careers.

Together, mentors and mentees catch up regularly to explore ideas and aspirations that are tailored to specific goals - helping students to feel more confident, informed and engaged in the professional landscape while also enabling mentors to further develop their own skill sets and form new contacts across LCC's vibrant network.

Our Industry Mentoring Programme runs alongside a programme of initiatives designed to empower our College community to achieve their career ambitions while contributing to a more diverse, inclusive and innovative society. Managed by our Graduate Futures team, complementary activities range from rapid review sessions and speed networking to our incubation programme, LCC Accelerate, which supports recent graduates to level-up their business ideas through practical advice and creative inspiration.

"Moulding the future of the creative industries"

Graduate Futures Manager Luminita Molico explained that our Industry Mentoring Programme not only supports the professional development of our students, but also enhances the creative collective.

"The Industry Mentoring Programme at LCC goes beyond professional connections; it fosters a sense of community and mutual growth," she said.

"Siddhant's success story is not just an individual triumph but a testament to the program's ability to elevate the creative community to greater heights - 1 mentorship at a time."

We chatted to MA Graphic Branding and Identity student Siddhant Joshi and his mentor, visitor experience professional Carlton Gajadhar, to discuss the highlights and the ethos behind taking part in the LCC Industry Mentoring Programme: from immersive experiences and ‘becoming a magnet’ to embracing challenges and fostering growth.

"The strategies behind brands that create distinct personalities and perceptions"

Siddhant, did you first become interested in graphic design and branding?

As a kid, I was always excited to buy fancy things. Over a period of time, my fascination met with a curiosity for what makes things ‘valuable’ or ‘premium’, which made me dive into the area of brand design.

After taking my first baby step of completing an undergraduate degree in communication design, I’m now studying for an MA in Graphic Branding and Identity to understand the strategies behind brands that create distinct personalities and perceptions in the minds of their target audiences.

Tell us about your creative practice.

As a budding brand designer, I’m interested in exploring the realm of brand experience and audio branding, which forms a key part of of my Final Major Project.

Up until now, I’ve tended to use my design skills in areas like user experience (UX) design, advertising and rebranding, but a hunger for maximum scale and impact has oriented me towards the power of music. Sound has a faster recall value compared to visuals, so my course has given me the freedom to explore the use of music and brand design to create something unique.

I’m forward to creating more and more ‘wow’ moments.

Why did you decide to take part in LCC's Industry Mentoring Programme?

My first taste of university was back in India. I didn’t really connect with any senior students or industry figures there, but I always thought that I could grow faster if I had a helping hand.

When I arrived in London, I felt scared to navigate my career. I wanted to build my own personal brand and get employed, which led me to signing up for industry mentoring.

"The transformative power of human connection"

Carlton, tell us a little bit about your professional experience and how you’ve developed your own creative practice.

My journey in the world of visitor experience consulting has been nothing short of extraordinary - filled with thrilling challenges and incredible opportunities to shape the way people explore and enjoy tourist attractions worldwide.

It all started back at London College of Communication, where I honed my skills and earned a degree in advertising and marketing. Those formative years not only equipped me with knowledge, but also instilled in me the passion to create unforgettable experiences for people. Little did I know that this would be the driving force behind my career.

My path took an exciting turn when I had the privilege of working with renowned organisations like Camp America, where I delved into marketing and outreach strategies. This experience allowed me to understand the importance of storytelling and engagement, which later became instrumental in my journey.

As I continued to grow, I embarked on an incredible adventure with Merlin Entertainments, where I discovered the magic of working at the London Eye. My time at the Royal Albert Hall further deepened my understanding of how culture and entertainment can touch the hearts of people from all walks of life.

One of the most exhilarating chapters of my career unfolded when I joined the team responsible for opening the ArcelorMittal Orbit - or 'The Slide.' The experience was a rollercoaster ride, but it taught me valuable lessons about teamwork, innovation and the power of bringing unique ideas to life.

Today, I find myself in the Middle East, working on ground-breaking projects that are redefining the tourism landscape. My focus lies in service and programme design, where I collaborate with diverse teams of up to 300 passionate individuals. Together, we’re dedicated to creating experiences that leave a lasting impact on visitors.

The projects I've been fortunate to be a part of - including Expo 2020 Dubai, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre, Kuwait, to name a few - have been nothing short of monumental. These global events have allowed me to witness the transformative power of human connection and the universality of the joy that travel and exploration can bring.

In a world that's constantly evolving, my creative journey has been a testament to the boundless possibilities that await those who dare to dream. It's a journey that reaffirms the importance of innovation, collaboration and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As I continue to open new attractions and museums in all corners of the world, I am fuelled by the belief that every experience we create has the potential to inspire, educate, and bring people closer together.

So, if there's one piece of advice I'd offer to anyone on their own creative journey, it's this: embrace the challenges, savour the triumphs, and never stop striving to craft experiences that touch the hearts and souls of those who seek adventure and wonder.

"Like planting a seed and watching it blossom"

Why did you decide to volunteer your time to LCC's Industry Mentoring Programme?

I decided to volunteer my time for a multitude of reasons, but the most significant one was my desire to give back to passionate individuals aiming to thrive in the creative industry.

It's crucial for me to collaborate with someone who is genuinely dedicated and possesses a compelling vision of their future in this field. When I see someone with that kind of drive, it excites me because I recognise the potential for them to achieve great things.

Volunteering in this programme allows me to share the invaluable knowledge and experiences I've accumulated throughout my own journey. I believe that mentoring can be a powerful way to fast-track someone's career and help them avoid some of the pitfalls and challenges that I faced when I was starting out.

There's a sense of fulfilment that comes from seeing someone you've mentored grow and succeed. It's like planting a seed and watching it blossom into a beautiful, thriving plant. And that feeling is truly priceless.

So, in essence, I joined LCC's Industry Mentoring Programme to be a guiding light for those with creative ambitions, to empower them, and to play a part in helping them achieve their dreams. It's not just about giving back; it's about investing in the future of the creative industry and watching it flourish through the talents of the next generation.

"Keep pushing forward, stay hungry for knowledge, and never stop believing in yourself"

What support have you both been able to access and offer by taking part in the initiative?

Siddhant: Carlton is a brilliant mentor. He had a perfect plan ready for the programme, where he asked me to achieve certain activities every month and followed up in every meeting – his communication skills and patience are really outstanding.

As I was interested in building brand experiences, he asked me to go to different places in London to explore the way people engage with them. I attended the ABBA Voyage concert on his advice, which felt like a really pivotal moment for me.

As Carlton works in a recruiting firm, he gave me several tips to develop my profile on LinkedIn and helped me to grow my reach. His tips and tricks helped me to receive offers without even applying to work opportunities, and he also guided through interview preparation and gave me some brilliant tips for networking.

Overall, mentoring has helped me grow so much that I don’t really have the words to describe his contribution to my journey!

Carlton: Supporting Siddhant's career aspirations has been an incredibly fulfilling journey, and one that I've cherished throughout our time together on the programme. We established a close bond early on, which laid the foundation for effective mentorship.

First and foremost, I shared my knowledge and experiences with Siddhant, giving him insights and perspectives that he hadn't encountered before. This fresh perspective was instrumental in broadening his horizons and helping him develop a more well-rounded understanding of his career goals. It's been nothing short of amazing to witness his rapid growth and transformation.

Siddhant is a remarkable individual, driven and committed to his ambitions. During our mentorship, we worked on refining his approach to networking and interpersonal skills. I encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone and provided guidance on how to effectively connect with others in his industry. These changes had a profound impact on his career trajectory.

Perhaps the most rewarding moment was when Siddhant informed me that he had been headhunted not once, but twice, towards the end of the programme. It was a testament to the growth and development he had undergone during our time together. By making subtle adjustments to how he presented himself, and by honing in on his unique value proposition, he was able to seize new opportunities that aligned perfectly with his career aspirations.

Siddhant's journey is a testament to the power of mentorship and the incredible potential that individuals possess when they have the right guidance and support. I couldn't be prouder of his achievements, and I have no doubt that he will continue to make waves in his chosen field. Siddhant's story serves as a reminder that with determination, continuous learning, and a strong support system, anyone can achieve their career goals and make a meaningful impact in the world.

So, to all aspiring professionals out there, remember that your dreams are within reach, and mentors like me are here to help you every step of the way. Keep pushing forward, stay hungry for knowledge, and never stop believing in yourself. Your journey to success is just beginning!

"A magnet that attracts opportunities"

Siddhant, how has taking part in the Industry Mentoring Programme helped you to develop your career and your practice?

Carlton helped me to broaden my thought process in terms of brand experience design by asking me to get first-hand experience of visiting places that are unique and have distinct flavour.

He taught me the tips and tricks of networking in meet-ups, and gave me enough attention and care whenever needed. His tips on my LinkedIn profile were also a game changer for me as they’ve opened a lot of doors in my career.

In short, I asked him: ‘How can I become a magnet that attracts opportunities rather than chasing them?’ I feel like he successfully delivered the help I needed to become that magnet.

Carlton, what have been the highlights of your time as an industry mentor?

One of the most rewarding experiences has been witnessing the incredible growth and transformation of Siddhant.

Siddhant faced his fair share of challenges along the way, but what truly stands out is his unwavering determination and resilience. He didn't let setbacks define him; instead, he used them as stepping stones towards personal and professional development. Seeing him overcome those hurdles and emerge stronger was an absolute joy.

One of the highlights for me was when Siddhant took my advice to heart. He not only listened but also actively implemented the guidance I provided. It's incredible how, by embracing change and striving for improvement, he was able to witness substantial progress. It's a testament to his commitment and eagerness to learn.

As I reflect on his journey and achievements during the mentoring programme, I can't help but feel an immense sense of pride. Siddhant's growth has been remarkable, and I have no doubt that he's destined for greatness in his career. His newfound confidence and drive are qualities that will continue to serve him well in the future.

In conclusion, being Siddhant's mentor has been an incredibly fulfilling experience. Seeing someone evolve, face challenges head-on, and emerge as a stronger, better version of themselves is what mentoring is all about. It's a reminder that with dedication and the right guidance, anyone can achieve their goals and make significant strides in their career. Siddhant's journey is a shining example of what's possible, and I look forward to witnessing his continued success and growth.

"Elevate the creative community to greater heights"

Siddhant, what are your top tips for other students on how to make the most of the mentoring initiative?
  • Take responsibility and maintain the discipline needed to do what your mentor asks you.
  • Be patient and don’t expect outstanding changes in your life over a single night: give your journey the time it needs to grow.
  • Stay humble and respect your mentor’s time.
Carlton, why would you encourage other practitioners to sign up as mentors?

I wholeheartedly encourage fellow creative practitioners to take the leap and become mentors. Why, you ask? Well, let me share my perspective.

There comes a point in our creative journeys when we might find ourselves standing at a crossroads, uncertain of which path to take. It's like navigating a dense forest without a map, and that can be incredibly daunting. That's where mentoring steps in like a guiding light.

Imagine having a mentor by your side for six months, someone with a wealth of experience and wisdom to share. This mentor becomes your confidant and a sounding board for your dreams, aspirations, and career goals. It's a transformative journey of sharing stories, setting ambitious objectives, and receiving invaluable guidance.

When I reflect on my own journey, I realise that having a mentor was a game-changer. They not only provided me with insights into my creative pursuits but also helped me make crucial life decisions. They cared deeply about my success and were unwavering in their commitment to helping me thrive.

Mentoring isn't just about giving advice; it's about nurturing talent, fostering growth, and passing on knowledge. When you become a mentor, you become a catalyst for someone else's success. You have the power to shape their future, just as your mentor did for you.

In the realm of creativity, where innovation and originality are prized, mentoring can be a transformative force. You can help budding artists, writers, designers, or any creative soul find their unique voice, refine their skills and make informed choices.

Moreover, the act of mentoring is immensely rewarding. Witnessing your mentees evolve and achieve their dreams is a joy like no other. It's a legacy you leave behind, a ripple effect of positive change in the creative world.

So, to my fellow creative practitioners, I urge you to take up the mantle of mentorship. Share your knowledge, lend a helping hand and watch as you not only enhance someone else's career but also propel your own.

Together, we can elevate the creative community to greater heights, one mentorship at a time.
