Universities UK have highlighted two courses at London College of Communication in reports celebrating best practice in Higher Education for international engagement that directly positively impacts on student experience.

The projects featured include short periods of work, study or volunteering abroad, virtual collaborations with international partners, and community building initiatives for diverse cohorts from multiple countries.

BA (Hons) Design for Branded Spaces 2019 study trip to the Maltese National Museum of Art was featured in the report Short-Term Mobility, Long Term Impact.

Students from the course worked on a project that supported the National Museum of Art in Malta MUŻA’s ambitions as a cultural force and destination where audiences and communities actively participate and connect with culture and, through these experiences, connect more deeply with each other.

In addition, Certificate in Higher Education: Preparation for Design, Media and Screen’s virtual film editing project with Federal University of Espirito Santo in Brazil appeared in Internationalisation At Home – Developing Global Citizens Without Travel.

The reports show how these types of projects help to break down barriers to physical and social mobility, improve academic and employment outcomes, boost intercultural competence and international networks, and make institutions more inclusive and sustainable spaces.

The projects run by these two LCC courses were the only covered in the reports relevant to creative subject disciplines after a direct approach to the College by Universities UK.

The launch of the reports were covered in a range of publications, including Research Professional News and Times Higher, as well as being shared with the Department for Education and the All Party Parliamentary Group on Universities.

Natalie Brett, Head of London College of Communication and UAL Pro Vice-Chancellor International, said:

“It is a tribute to the distinctiveness of our offer at LCC that Universities UK asked us to be included in these reports, and it is extremely heartening that examples from LCC teams will shape the future work of the university sector in this area.

“The LCC projects featured in the reports are also a great reminder of how international engagement can bring so many benefits to our creative community.”

As we emerge from the pandemic and transition from the Erasmus+ programme into the new UK government Turing programme, UAL is looking to significantly increase its provision and access to international experiences like those featured in the reports.
