Students from London College of Communication’s BA (Hons) Graphic Branding & Identity course invited industry guests into their studio – holding discussions and gaining feedback from a variety of creatives and professional practitioners as part of a special industry evening.

With industry guests from the likes of Kind Studio, Rufus Leonard, Creative Interpartners, Spencer Du Bois, Wonder Creative and Echo, the evening – part of the College’s ongoing work ensuring students are ready for industry as soon as they graduate – also allowed students to network with agencies and get a foot in the door prior to LCC Degree Shows 2018 and their graduation.

We spoke to some of the guests and students about the experience and the importance of receiving first-hand feedback from creative professionals…

Rebecca Matthews, Creative Interpartners:

“I must say I was really impressed by the quality of work displayed – there are some really brilliant thinkers within the group and that really shines through in the work which is full of great ideas that have been wonderfully executed.

“It was also really great seeing students creating projects that have both print and digital applications, as that ability to translate ideas across different media will be so essential when they enter the industry.

It was a great evening and I am very much looking forward to seeing the final show.”

Sophie Draper, BA (Hons) Graphic Branding & Identity Student:

‘The portfolio evening was extremely valuable – I learnt so much about my work and how to present it better as I got tips throughout the night on ways to improve when talking about my work.

“Receiving compliments on my work from professionals in the industry really boosted my confidence and I found it so valuable to practice presenting so many times – it’s made me feel much more confident talking about my work in the future and talking in front of ‘scary’ people. The feedback was very positive, the industry professionals all had such lovely things to say, anything negative was constructive and showed me ways to make my work better.

“It is so important to attend these kinds of events, the experience overall is so rewarding and things you learn are invaluable.”

Milly Nicholson, Rufus Leonard:

“It was great to see such passionate young designers create insightful, creative and unexpected design solutions for challenging subjects.

“This course and its students are ones to watch out for!”

Paula Williams, Wonder Creative:

“It was a really dynamic event and great to see such diversity in the projects, approaches and thinking.

There were clever and original solutions, all beautifully presented.”

Olivia Lee, BA (Hons) Graphic Branding & Identity student:

“Two of the industry guests told me in length about working as freelancer in the field and I feel like I’ve built connections with them. I was surprised to receive feedback that I’m good at editorials and typography which I always thought was one of my weaknesses – it was a real confidence boost! One of them even said I’m a good designer – that’s really encouraged me!

“It’s important to meet with professional creatives as during the course so far we’ve mostly received feedback and critiques from our tutors and peers but, although this was also very valuable, having more people from the industry to talk about my work gave me more thoughts, new ideas and also made me feel more confident about my career progression.”
