Biography

Serhan graduated in 2015. He is a Student Ambassador and now works at Hawkins/Brown architectural practice in London.

About me

I was born and raised in Hackney, between Dalston and Stoke Newington. Looking back I was always relatively creative and it was quite early in life that I began to intuitively draw and make things. It was during my Art Foundation where I became interested in the poetry, theatricality and craftsmanship of the built environment, steering me towards an architectural discourse. It was the experimental and interdisciplinary attitude that drew me towards Central Saint Martins.

I submerged myself in the Fine Art, Fashion and Film departments, and would often interweave these into my architectural pursuit. My practice of work has now developed into one that is concerned with social and cultural resilience whilst also seeking a craftsmanship that embraces the arts as a whole, exercising skills of hand-drawing, model-making, textiles, performance and film.

Student ambassador

I was first introduced to the role of student ambassadors while in my Foundation year, where I was attending weekly architecture workshops led by Andrew Sides and the Spatial Practices Programme.

Throughout my three years at CSM the role would see me organising and participating in making workshops and portfolio sessions that would aim to offer an insight into the craft and discipline of architecture. It was a fantastic time where the interdisciplinary nature of the school could be seen to interweave the different departments and students into a team where we collaboratively tested the very boundaries of our disciplines. As I continue my work with Widening Participation, my Student Ambassador role continues to present an invaluable opportunity to exercise and strengthen my understanding and practice.

Some advice

It's rare to be in such a diverse and creative environment and for any prospective student, I would only advise to really saturate yourself in it, soak up everything CSM has to offer and spit it back out through your creative practice, challenge yourself to push the boundaries of your discipline, work harder and aim higher.

After graduating...

I recently completed a project where I worked on designing the 'Creation After Catastrophe' exhibition at the RIBA Headquarters, showcasing architectural projects that explore the destruction of cities can present unique opportunities to radically rethink townscapes.

I am currently working at Hawkins/Brown Architects where the scale of my interests has shifted into masterplanning fragments of the city.

I am also continuing my work as a Student Ambassador and teaching assistant at CSM, and hope to develop a craftsmanship that may one day apply as a leader of my own studio of architecture students. I hope to further advance the amalgamation of interests and skills I have gained on a postgraduate course, and begin the journey of mastering and refining a craft of architectural design that I may call my own.
