Biography

I am an artist and teacher with extensive experience of running Fine Art Masters level courses both as a Course Leader and as Postgraduate Programme Director. I run the MA Fine Art Digital course and I am also a UAL Teaching Scholar.

My research and teaching interests explore the way blended practices can facilitate the emerging of new possibilities. The is evident in both an art practice that engages physical and digital media and a teaching practice that seeks to facilitate learning opportunities for all through online digital tools.

Since 2004 I have pioneered online learning for Fine Art Masters students with the MA Fine Art Digital course where students are able to fully engage from anywhere in the world. This innovative approach to learning is backed by my research and experimentation, which shows how an understanding of the digital can enhance both learning and art practice.

I have significant international experience, both in exhibiting my own work and curating exhibitions. Having lived in China I have exhibited, curated and taught at many institutions, gaining insight into Chinese contemporary art and thinking. I have worked in a wide range of artistic settings, including; an artist run gallery space; as Artistic Director for a major gallery in China; curated shows with the ICA, London; Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool, St Martin in the Fields Church, Trafalgar Square, London, Art Electronica, Linz, Austria and worked with several festivals and community based projects.

I have had the honour of been awarded the UAL Teaching Award, which is nominated by students, on four separate occasions.

My research interests are online and blended pedagogy, art practice and theological engagement and fine art practice in a digital environment.
