It was Making Week for BA Architecture. The annual project sees students devise and make 1:1 scale structures in the Street so by Friday there was an array of wonderful  – from CNC cut timber to expanding foam and wheat cladding.

“When music acts as inspiration, it’s boundary-less.” Three cheers for the news that CSM alum M.I.A is curating this year’s Meltdown festival,

Woman’s Hour Craft Prize came to visit. They caught hands busy at work, from knitters and stitchers to throwers and burnishers.

Walls are having a bad time of it in the current climate so it’s refreshing to see graphics alum Jimmy Turrell take inspiration from Newcastle’s Byker Wall and its community to create a new typeface.

Jonathan Keep took up residence with his clay 3D printing machine in our exhibition Craftsmanship Alone Is Not Enough. And we spoke to Duncan Hooson, Stephanie Buttle and Emma Lacey about their ceramic work. It’s the final weekend so don’t miss the show!

We read about Gabby Edlin (MA Applied Imagination) and her Bloody Good project, providing sanitary products to asylum seekers.

Fraser Muggeridge spoke to the BA Graphic Design students. He extolled the virtues of the unfinished, using technology the wrong way and letter-pressing pitta bread: “It’s easy to to do what a client wants, but I often think that you should challenge them with an idea… I get rejected every day for my stupid ideas.”

Subcultural nightlife of the 70s and 80s is brought to life in a solo show of work by CSM alumni, the late great Jo Brocklehurst at our neighbour The House of Illustration.

And finally, if any more proof were needed about the power of creativity to cross disciplinary boundaries meet Elizabeth Allen, who graduated in architecture at CSM and is now Michelin-starred head chef at Pidgin.
