MA Dramatic WritingOur new MA Dramatic Writing course has launched a 12-month exploration of what dramatic writing training can be in the UK.

The Year of Experimentation will be run by Course Leader Jennifer Tuckett, who has led the way in developing new industry-partnered models for teaching creative writing. She will work alongside nine other dramatic writing professionals, known as Masters.

Students recently completed their first investigations for the project, as set by Jennifer Tuckett and former Dramaturg at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Caroline Jester. The students explored ways to train writers in collaborative practice and investigated the possibility of using REPwrite – a new online dramatic writing tool – in training.

Speaking about the project, Tuckett said: ““MA Dramatic Writing is unique in appointing ten Masters who have led the way in the teaching of dramatic writing in the UK. The Year of Experimentation will be an exciting exploration of the future of dramatic writing training, and the first time all ten professionals have come together to share and reflect on this knowledge.”

Future investigations and commissions for the project will be set by Masters including Nina Steiger, Associate Director at the Soho Theatre, Steve Winter, Director of Old Vic New Voices, and Philip Shelley, who runs Channel Four’s screenwriting course. The Year of Experimentation will conclude with a public event in the summer, which will explore the project’s findings and showcase student work.
