Interview

Why did you choose to study MA Performance: Screen at Central Saint Martins?

Having a background in theatre has been a leading path to filmmaking. I started my artistic journey at the age of five with music and since then I have always seen myself as a performer. As a theatre artist, the art of portraying compelling stories through aesthetically enthralling visuals always fascinated me; thus leading me to become a filmmaker. MA Performance: Screen is a combination of both moving images as well as performance and that is the sole reason for me to join this course. Getting into CSM rather than choosing CSM is a big deal. CSM hold the ranking of being one of the best art schools in the world where students think, create and make art for a better upcoming future.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far?

We have been exposed to many different media forms over the course of our first year. the most interesting project till now for me was to work on 16mm analogue film. Being a filmmaker, I have always worked on digital cameras and this was my very first hands on experience. Working with analogue film comes with a lot of planning, choreography and most importantly the suspense of not knowing how your film is going to turn out to be. During this particular project I have learnt a lot about the technicalities of filmmaking as well as values like being ready to work around things, problem solving as well as art of mise en sćene.

What projects/successes have you been involved with since starting the course?

I have been a part of the platform theatre team where I have been working as a cinematographer to shoot various student projects. I have also been part of few MA level student projects. I am currently helping a few MA Film students at London College of Communication, to develop their final pieces. I am also a student ambassador for CSM. As part of my second year, I am planning to work with a theatre company for specially abled people called ‘Graeae’, where I will be documenting the entire process of theatre making for specially abled people as well as I will be indulging in conversations with these talented performers.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Join this course with a very open mind. This course demands sheer hard work, flexibility and a problem-solving attitude. Also, make full use of the access to our brilliant professors and all the facilities provide by the university.

What has been the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

CSM has taught me to become more accepting of the people around me. CSM has so many students from various parts of the world, and it is so interesting to get to know them, this has taught me to always embrace and learn from the variety of cultures and traditions. CSM has been playing a vital role in making me realise the combination of your ownvalues and culture with artworks and making it even splendid by mixing it all together. CSM is a universe, completing the meaning of a university in every way possible.

What are your career aspirations?

I have always been a narrative person and being a writer all my stories have narratives. I would like to work with communities in the UK and portray all their unheard stories converting them into a fiction using narratives and show it to the world using commercial cinema. In five years’ time, I see myself working with upcoming documentary as well as filmmakers who chooses to make a difference in this world through their artwork.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

The biggest learning from this course till now has been broadening the capability of interpreting performance and filmmaking, even though technical skills are really important to understand this course has compelled me to think and to an extent dream like an artist. Using collaborations and experimentations this course has helped me get more clearer on my artistic approach as well as it has opened many school of thoughts.
