Biography

In simple terms I would describe myself as a sculptor with a conceptual and multi-disciplinary approach. I work in 2D, 3D and 4D examining ideas through objects, installations and texts.

My main focus is on the spaces where art and psychoanalysis meet. It is a response to being in the world both as a personal and sensory experience and as a public animal.

After my initial training at Central Saint Martins, I went on to do a Masters by project at the RCA involving many departments and was awarded the British Art Medal Scholarship in Rome where I studied sculpture for three years.

Why did you decide to study at Central Saint Martins?

I liked its central location and its reputation. Also, I think I must have been unconsciously following in my fathers footsteps as we both did the same course. He then went on to do painting and I have gone on to do sculpture (and related disciplines).

What was the best bit about living and studying in London?

I was born in London and feel that London, rather like New York because of its big city mentality, is one of the best melting pots for ideas and innovation.

What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?

Throw yourself into it. Push yourself to the limit. Start as you mean to go on.

And for students about to graduate?

Go on.

What are you up to now? How did you get there?

I followed my own advice and worked really hard in all the areas that interest me. While keeping firmly rooted I like to take up a challenge and explore areas that are new to me. Moving both backwards and forwards I take inspiration and techniques both from the past (family roots, sculpture techniques etc.) and from the new technologies in digital media. Sometimes I combine the two as in my video 'Dead or Alive'.

How has Central Saint Martins helped in your chosen career path?

It has given me a 'tool kit' of skills and instruction and a confidence which comes from the fact that I have studied there. This in itself is a 'proof of pedigree'.
