I completed my MA at Central Saint Martins in 2003 and immediately set up Transition Gallery in Hackney.
I also edit two magazines; Arty and Garageland. My own artwork often takes the form of groups of paintings, which may be combined with other elements to create fragmented narratives that chart a curious contemporary longing for something unobtainable.
Current work focuses on shared experiences and how these form false memories. Recent exhibitions include 'Remember My Name', Sartorial, London; 'The Image Duplicator' at Contemporary Art Projects, London; 'The Golden Record' at Collective Gallery, Edinburgh and 'New London School' at Mark Moore Gallery, LA, USA.
Why did you decide to study at Central Saint Martins?
The college has a great reputation and is known all over the world. It also has a fantastic location so it feels really connected to everything that is going on in London.
What was the best bit about living and studying in London?
Access to an amazingly diverse art scene from iconic world established artists to the newest most exciting emerging art.
What top tips would you give to students who are beginning their studies?
Make use of the resources around you - make sure that you see as much art as possible and go to loads of artists' talks. And be open minded to new ideas whilst still retaining your own identity.
And for students about to graduate?
Form connections with your fellow students - the bonds that you make with them may lead to lots of support and opportunities in the future. Make sure that you enter any relevant competitions - do not miss deadlines. Believe in yourself and be persistent.
What are you up to now? How did you get there?
I am working on some new ideas at the moment which is always an exciting and scary place to be. I have a multi-stranded career alongside my own art practice. I run Transition Gallery, a contemporary art space in east London, and edit two magazines - Arty and Garageland. I also do bits of lecturing, writing, curating, judging and any other art-related opportunities that come my way.
I started the gallery immediately after graduating from Central Saint Martins initially as a place to show work by me and my friends. It has now grown into something with its own identity.
Similarly I started Arty while still at Central Saint Martins and it has carried on and developed. I try and tie all of my activities together so that they feed into each other. Transition is very much an artist-run space and not a commercial gallery and it is invaluable to my practice as it allows me to develop ideas and connect with lots of really exciting artists.
How has Central Saint Martins helped in your chosen career path?
Central Saint Martins has a great reputation and this alone can open doors. It also introduced me to lots of new ideas and people.
