Interview

Why did you choose to study your course and why Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

The appeal of my course was that it wasn't focused on one gender and it had a strong focus on world building. Rather than just design clothes, we also have to construct a universe they fit into. I wanted to study at CSM because it was a total 360 from the lifestyle and community I grew up in for the last 18 years in Texas. I really wanted to be in a community of likeminded people that saw creativity the same way I do.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?

The final collection has been the most interesting so far. It's such an amazing opportunity because there really isn't a limit on what you can and can't do -anything goes. It's really a chance to completely realise your vision to the max of its possibilities. It's meant that I've worked with lots of collaborators and helpers to make it all come to fruition. It's very challenging but also extremely rewarding.

Have you completed any work placements / internships whilst being on the course?

I interned with a hat maker for the first half of my placement, which was really amazing. Many of my favorite designers interned with a milliner to understand how to sculpt materials and build shape. I was inspired by this trajectory and I ended up assisting Noel Stewart for 6 months. We did many different types of projects, from hats for Shakespeare's Globe to Balenciaga Couture. After this, I went to Maison Margiela and interned in the Artisanal division. The responsibilities for this role ranged across the board, from sourcing materials at flea markets to making a chandelier out of paper. I think I learned the most here about taste and reference collecting.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

I think you have to consider if you are willing to dedicate most of your time to the course. I think CSM and specifically the fashion courses are really about presenting work at the highest level. This is awesome, but it really pushes you to your limits at times.

What has been the highlight of your CSM experience so far?

Connecting to people in CSM on my course and outside of my course has been the best part. The student body is so diverse and the talent level is so high, you end up learning a lot just from making friends.

What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years time?

I would like to start my own brand in some shape or form. I think the current structure of brands is somewhat broken, so I'd like to create my own path within this. My pieces are often one of one, so I'd like to continue in that direction as it makes people have more connection with their clothes and cherish them more. I want to eventually scale my practice up so my pieces are available to a wider audience, but keep the scale small.

What is the most important thing you've learnt on the course so far?

You are in competition with no one except yourself. It's easier said than done, but comparing yourself to others is utterly useless. Learning to trust your gut and commit to the vision you have is the biggest thing I've learned.
