Interview

Why did you choose to study MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Journalism at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

I previously studied Fashion Communication and Management in Düsseldorf, Germany and worked in the fashion industry as a journalist and content manager. After working more on the branded content side for a year, I decided to apply for the MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Journalism course at Central Saint Martins, because I saw it as an opportunity to become part of the international fashion industry as a journalist and to strengthen my English writing skills. I have always had a passion for fashion and loved writing and hearing people's stories, so fashion journalism is the perfect way to combine the two. London and Central Saint Martins are where a lot of the new and exciting designers are emerging, so it seemed like the right place for me. It's very inspiring to be surrounded by so much creativity every day.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far?

‘Rewilding Textiles’, a 122-page publication created on behalf of Maison/0, the Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London and LVMH platform for regenerative luxury. I had the privilege to be one of the leading editors for this forward-thinking publication, which provides an entry point into the world of regenerative design for textile and fashion designers. In addition to creating a publication plan and managing over 20 contributors, I had the great pleasure of interviewing Alexandre Capelli, Environmental Deputy Director of LVMH, to discuss the transition to regenerative luxury across all of LVMH’s brands.

This project reinforced my interest in sustainability and ethical alternatives in fashion. Through my work, I aim to bring the topic to the masses in a positive way, without being preachy, and highlighting new innovations and forward-thinking creators.

Have you completed any work placements or internships while studying on the course?

I was already working in the fashion industry as a writer before starting MA Fashion Communication: Journalism, so I continued to do this while studying. I wrote fashion business stories for multiple publications including FashionUnited and Glossy, which involved attending a lot of interesting industry events and trade fairs.

Over the summer I interned at WGSN, in their ‘City by City’ team, putting together the London Guide. This involved a lot of research, and it was fun getting into all the new fashion and retail outlets of the city.

What advice would you give to students thinking of studying MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Journalism?

Believe in yourself. Maybe find a niche that you're passionate about and become an expert in that field.Don't be afraid to be ambitious!

What has been the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

CSM and, especially, my course leader, Roger Tredre, made me believe in myself and my writing skills.I gained the confidence to continuously pitch my ideas to various publications, and it worked out very well in the end: I recently published my first story for VOGUE Germany, which has always been a dream of mine. 14-year-old Lara would be so proud.

What are your career aspirations?

My course leader once asked us if we rather see ourselves working in fashion or in journalism. At the beginning of the MA, I said it was journalism all the way. However, I now see myself primarily working in fashion. The course showed me that there are so many other options to engage in fashion through creative writing. My ideal career would be working in copywriting for a brand or e-commerce company, while still pursuing my journalism on the side. I would like to continue shining the light on pressing issues such as sustainability in fashion and give change-makers and innovative new designers a voice.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

Failing or being rejected is not the end of the world. You can stand up and try again, I learnt resilience and to build my career one step at a time.
