Fashion and Textiles

Fashion studios

Focused on pattern cutting and garment construction, students can design, pattern cut and sew garments, develop projects for fashion labels, tailored garments and final collections.

Equipment

  • Industrial sewing machines.
  • Overlockers.
  • Industrial irons.
  • Fusing presses.
  • Dress stands.

Knit workshop

Focused on knitted textiles and fashion knitwear and the production of structured, patterned or multi coloured knitted fabrics and garments.

Equipment

  • Dubied knitting machines ranging from 2.5 gauge (chunky) through to 14 gauge (fine).
  • Domestic machines including Brother and Silver Reeds knitting machines.
  • Finishing machines including linking machines, overlocking machines, industrial steam iron and  yarn winders.
  • Stoll machine for fully automated gauge knitting.

Weave workshop

Focused on designing and making a wide variety of fabrics and structures for different applications: fashion, interiors, accessories and one-off woven installation pieces. Students are encouraged to use both experimental and standard materials and approaches.

Equipment

  • Table looms.
  • Electronic Dobby looms.
  • ARM computerised looms.
  • State of the art TC2 jacquard looms.

Print and dye workshops

Students can develop fabric designs through colour, pattern and texture, using screen print, heat transfer (both traditional and digital) and dyeing (including yarn dyeing). A wide variety of media is available, producing textiles for fashion garments, wallpapers and furnishing fabrics.

Equipment:

  • Heat transfer presses and a rotary press.
  • Fume cabinets.
  • Hobs with stainless steel pans for  small scale dyeing.
  • Dye vats for large scale dyeing.
  • Steamers and baking cabinets.
  • Light boxes and cutting mats for artwork preparation.
  • Washing machines.
  • Screens with 43TW mesh for sampling and repeat printing.
  • Range of pigments, inks and dyes.
  • Print tables, for both repeat and placement printing.
  • Screen drying cabinets and screen exposure units.
  • Wash out bays with pressure washers and gentle hoses.

Surface Design Lab

Digital print design and embellishment facilities for textiles and soft surfaces.

The workshop offers a small range of recycled polyester fabric for dye sublimation printing and a large range of sustainable natural fabrics for pigment printing including recycled and organic cottons, bamboo, milk protein, and corn biopolymer fabric.

Equipment:

  • Dye sublimation large format printer – Epson Surecolor F9300.
  • Direct pigment large format printer – Mimaki Tx300P-1800Mkii.
  • Direct Eco pigment printer – Epson SureColour F2100.
  • PR Brother embroidery machine (x2) – PR1050X.
  • PR Brother embroidery machine (x2) – PR655.
  • Juki Irish – Juki LZ-271.

Yarn Store

Knit workshop, 10am-11am Monday to Friday.

A selection of basic yarns is available for students on Fashion, Jewellery, Textiles and Materials programmes for sampling on the knitting machines and hand knitting.
