Central Saint Martins Foundation students studying Fashion and Textiles collaborated recently with Alexander McQueen to address issues around sustainability in the fashion industry.
The students responded to fabric and yarn remnants supplied by Alexander McQueen studio, developing ideas and work which reacted to colour and texture, with an emphasis on seeing the potential in something that would have otherwise been discarded.
The Alexander McQueen team gave feedback to all students, and 22 were selected to continue with the project. A panel of judges from Alexander McQueen and Central Saint Martins Foundation went on to select 10 finalists. The winner, James Sutherland, was offered a paid internship at Alexander McQueen.
Speaking about the win in an interview with us earlier this month, James recalled:
When I got the call that I’d won, I was on the bus, but I screamed anyway!
Oonagh O’Hagan, Central Saint Martins Fashion and Textiles Curriculum Leader, said:
Working with the Alexander McQueen team was an incredible opportunity for our Foundation students. This industry project framed issues of sustainability in real-life situations and challenged the students to consider the sustainable future of the fashion and textiles industry.
Lucy Shaw, Senior Designer at Alexander McQueen, added:
We were really impressed by the high standard of work. The level of creativity that we saw from the Foundation students rivalled that of degree level work.
