Interview

Why did you choose to study MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Image at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

I always wanted to study at Central Saint Martins; for me, it is THE fashion school. I chose MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Image because it encompassed everything I enjoy about fashion, with the freedom to really innovate. I'd also heard a lot about the course from previous students and was impressed with the work the course was producing.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far?

My Final Project: it was interesting because I really pushed my understanding of what 'Fashion Image' could be. It is not limited to photography or moving-image, so it really “future-proofs” you for the industry. Everything was done with a lot of thought, care and collaboration.

Have you completed any work placements or internships while studying?

You can definitely build up industry experience while you’re studying on the course, however I wanted to really focus on my coursework and take on freelance work when I had the capacity . I worked for Lululemon, Crafts Council, Bytedance and took on Art Direction jobs. I also set up the Decolonising Fashion Society at University of the Arts London, which was inspired by one of our course units,‘Re-imagining Fashion’.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying MA Fashion Communication: Fashion Image?

Make sure that your portfolio shows your unique point of view. This course produces image-makers who are the trailblazers of the next era of fashion imager. It does this by constantly pushing you to create work we haven't all seen before - even if it’s not conventionally ‘beautiful’.

So my advice is to really show an exciting, fresh way of thinking and creating visual work.

What has been the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

I've had so many! However, a real highlight was working with MA Fashion right at the beginning of the course, in the lead up to their London Fashion Week show. I was incredibly lucky to be able to work with Ed Mendoza, who won the L’Oréal Professionnel Creative Award at the show!

What are your career aspirations?

Working internationally with brands, organisations and communities combining fashion, education, and technology. I'd like to delve deeper into Web3 innovations and utilise my fashion and education background to create cutting-edge campaigns, meta-worlds, and special projects.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

Learning to challenge perceptions of what you 'think' you should be creating and leaning into what feels right for your own work. For too long, I was trying to make imagery that was... in all honesty, a mere replica of work already out there. Thanks to my course leader's advice and questioning, I began to stop trying to be something I was not.
