Interview

Why did you choose to study Character Animation at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

After I completed my BA, I didn’t feel prepared enough to step into the Animation industry just yet. I needed the technique and definitely a lot more practice. MA Character Animation at CSM was quite well known for being a postgraduate course offering formation in animation and it felt like the perfect fit for what I needed. Thankfully, I was right!

What have you been working on since graduating?

During my time at CSM I was working as a Creative Assistant at Moonbug Entertainment and I did that for a year and a few months. It was a great first foot into the industry and I even got promoted to Designer during my last few months at the company. Once I finished the course, I looked for a position in Animation. I thankfully got hired by Studio AKA, as a Junior Animator on the show ‘Hey Duggee’! I also freelance every now and then on smaller gigs and develop my own ideas during my spare time.

What was the most interesting project you worked on during your time on the course?

Most definitely the London International Animation Festival sting. I got to pitch and direct an animated short for one of the festival’s categories and it was a great first glance into the world of directing in animation. The film I got to work on with colleagues, HENCH GIRL SUMMER, got selected by a bunch of festivals and provided me a lot of opportunities. It was one of my favourite projects to work on to this date!

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

I would advise looking into the course’s programmes and seeing if it aligns with your expectations. I’m a firm believer that you should only do a postgraduate course if you know what you want to take from it in the end. More than the course, it’s very important that you use up all the opportunities that come with the course, the people you meet, and all the connections you make. That could bring you a whole lot of opportunities in the future.

What was the highlight of your Central Saint Martins experience?

Meeting so many Creatives as passionate about animation as me, and being able to share ideas and connect with them. Even after graduating, my peers (now friends) and I still share job opportunities amongst each other, attend networking events and festivals together. I believe it’s very important to keep the momentum going after graduating, and having a strong support system could be very integral to this.

What is the most important thing you learnt on the course?

Besides learning the principles of Animation which was absolutely crucial to learning the craft, I learnt from our lecturer Steve (to whom I owe a very big thank you for all I know about Animation) that it is super important to make yourself known in the industry. We should not be afraid to go up to people we admire and introduce ourselves and our work, because that could potentially be where our next opportunity comes from. And I can happily confirm this advice has served me well.
