Biography

I am an artist, writer and teacher. My artworks have been exhibited internationally and include kinetic and kinetic-sonic sculptures, diagrams, animations, posters, videos and live performances. I won the Mark Tanner Sculpture Prize in 2020, developing new robotic works for the touring exhibition Evolutionary Love. In 2022 my interactive kinetic sound installation The Origin of Life was acquired by the Arts Council Collection. In 2023 with Emma Hart I brought 22 artists together for Poor Things, an exhibition of sculpture about social class at Fruitmarket, Edinburgh. I am represented by Division of Labour.

I have published articles in journals such as Third Text, Journal of Visual Art Practice, Art Monthly and Mute, including on the theory and practice of diagramming, on ‘idiocy’ as a mode of art practice, on fine art pedagogy, and on the politics of art and art education. I often work within groups, and am currently a member of the Diagram Research Group – our book Drawing Analogies will be published by Bloomsbury in 2024.

I have developed diagramming tools as a method of teaching and have run diagramming workshops with students at many institutions including the London School of Economics, Slade School of Art, Institute of Education, Goldsmiths College, Kingston University, University of Worcester and UAL (CSM and Wimbledon).

I am an Associate Lecturer in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, where I have taught for many years at undergraduate and postgraduate level. I currently work on the MA Fine Art courses, delivering the Art in Context lecture series, and as a studio tutor. I also teach on the MRes Art and Philosophy course.

I am also a Research Fellow at Kingston School of Art, where I supervise practice-based PhDs.
