Interview

Why did you choose to study your course at Central Saint Martins (CSM)?

I came from a more traditional academic background (I studied Law) where I felt bored and a bit out of place. I knew barely anything about CSM when I applied, but I randomly saw a TikTok about UAL’s Insights course and thought: why not. That ended up guiding me towards Fashion Communication, and eventually fashion journalism. What I didn’t realise at first is how wide-reaching fashion journalism actually is. It also felt like a space where I could bring my own perspective, find original angles, and make work that feels specific to me.

What’s the most interesting project you’ve worked on so far? What made it so interesting to work on?

I really enjoy the mix of individual and group projects. One of my favourites recently was working in the film studios and using the green screens to make a menswear video review. I liked being able to do it with my own vision, outside the usual “review” format - I ended up making it as a parody of a staff training video. Working with classmates also means you learn things you just wouldn’t pick up on your own. Another memorable project was making a zine in my first year about a North Korean girl band, and I went to the embassy to ask questions.

Have you completed any work placements / internships whilst being on the course?

I recently interned at Kerry Taylor Auctions, where I learned a lot about the luxury auction space, and the full process of how auctioneers and second-hand vintage sellers operate. I worked with a range of garments from Cosprop (who create period costumes for film and TV), including pieces worn by Maggie Smith for Downton Abbey and suits worn by Johnny Depp. I also handled rare Victorian-era clothing and rare Vivienne Westwood.

What important piece of advice would you give to students thinking of studying this course?

Have your own voice, have your own opinion and use your own background in your work. Bring in references from outside fashion. Really analyse the briefs and use all the facilities (film studios, digital labs, etc) because that is where you can develop your skills and create work that you couldn't have made on your own. Experiment, try new things, and, even if it doesn't work, at least you tried something new and (hopefully) gained new skills!

What are your career aspirations? Where would you like to be in five years time?

I’m not totally sure on one job title yet, but I’d like to be working as a fashion journalist in a more creative way - writing features and criticism, but also making short-form and documentary-style video, and even photography. In five years, I want a portfolio that’s recognisably mine.
