UAL appoints Dr Rathna Ramanathan Pro Vice-Chancellor & Head of College, Central Saint Martins

University of the Arts London (UAL) is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Rathna Ramanathan, as the new Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of College, Central Saint Martins. She will take up her post in September 2022.
Rathna is a typographer, practice researcher and academic known for her expertise in intercultural communication and alternative publishing practices. Originally, from Chennai, India, Rathna first came to London as an international student at Central Saint Martins (CSM).
Her academic career, in the UK, began at CSM, where she started as an associate lecturer in graphic design, progressing to her most recent appointment as Dean of Academic Strategy and Reader in Intercultural Communication. Rathna was previously Dean of the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art, where she led an experienced team in delivering the College’s first virtual and highly acclaimed graduate showcase during the pandemic.
Professor Roni Brown, UAL Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, said; “Rathna is a bold, ethical and inclusive strategic leader, with significant experience in shaping dynamic and innovative teaching and learning across taught and research programmes. She will ensure a vibrant, equitable, and dynamic student experience for the whole of the Central Saint Martins’ community.”
UAL’s President and Vice-Chancellor, James Purnell, commented: “With this appointment Rathna brings her award-winning research-led, collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to Central Saint Martins, UAL. She has a track record in delivering international communication design projects which focus on amplifying marginalised voices and will be a powerful advocate for the students and staff of Central Saint Martins.”
