The Swing of the Headless, Yinka Shonibare MBE

Next month the Postgraduate Art Auction returns to the Lethaby Gallery bringing together an incredible collection of donations from our celebrated alumni, friends and students.

This year the annual auction will see the walls of the gallery filled with donations from acclaimed artists, as well as artworks fresh from the studios of our current students and recent graduates.

It is impossible to adequately acknowledge the generosity of the artists in our annual postgraduate auction. It is such an extraordinary gesture, to gift your artwork in the service of others and in the best interests of a future generation.”
Paul Hayward, Dean of Academic Programmes, Central Saint Martins.

Lots in the live auction, for which we welcome returning auctioneer-extraordinaire Adrian Biddell, include generous donations from a host of previous Turner Prize winners and nominees including Antony Gormley, Mona Hatoum (recently named Whitechapel Gallery’s Art Icon 2018), Mark Titchner, Yinka Shonibare and Jake and Dinos Chapman and Paula Rego. Rana Begum, whose installation No. 700 Reflectors was installed as a central feature in King’s Cross earlier this year, continues to deepen her local engagement with her first donation to the auction.

From a decapitated figure on a swing to a growling jaguar, it is perhaps not surprising given to the current political climate that many artists are responding with works that create a palpable sense of unease. A new gothic sensibility for the modern day: mysterious unicorns emerge from dark forests, lurid pythons hang in the trees, ghostly figures walk through a toxic mist, film starlets from a bygone age emerge from the shadows.”
Alex Schady, Fine Art Programme Director

Alongside the live auction sits the silent auction comprising of work by our final year Postgraduate Art Programme students, offering bidders the chance to invest in some of the most exciting up and coming artists. With proceeds contributing towards the Postgraduate Art Programme students’ fund, the evening not only offers the opportunity to walk away with work by those at the forefront of contemporary art but to support its next generation.

The exhibition will be open in the Lethaby Gallery from 9-16 November with the Postgraduate Art Auction taking place on Thursday 16 November, 5.30 – 8.30pm. Visit the Auction website to view the lots and register your bid.
